UČEŠĆE LABORATORIJE ZA TOKSIKOLOGIJU INSTITUTA ZA SUDSKU MEDICINU U MEĐUNARODNIM TESTOVIMA STRUČNOCSTI

The Institute of Forensic Medicine, ie the Laboratory of Toxicology, in May 2021 participated in the international proficiency test for the analysis of alcohol in the blood. This test is organized by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (NITFS) in Seville, Spain. The institute in question sent unknown samples to our Toxicology Laboratory of the IFM, through the storage chain and then our Laboratory analyzed those samples and sent the results to Spain.

After 14 working days we received emails from NITFS with the official report of test results. Based on this report, the toxicology laboratory of the IFM has a result that corresponds to 99.9% of the theoretical concentration of the comparative samples analyzed. Also based on the evaluation of the result – [i]Z-score, the Toxicology Laboratory of the IFM have resulted in two samples with Z-score 0.00 and one -0.33 which represents an identical result with the average result.

It is worth noting that this result has ranked IFM among the 10 most accurate laboratories, out of 55 participating laboratories from around the world.

What is the Alcohol Proficiency Test (PT)?

The Proficiency Test (PT) or competency test determines the performance of individual Laboratories for specific tests or measurements. This test is used to monitor the ongoing performance of laboratories by comparing the measurement results of a Laboratory with other comparative laboratories. The aptitude test is also called inter-laboratory comparison which means the comparison of measurement results from different laboratories.

– What is achieved with PT?

By participating in the aptitude test, in addition to evaluating and monitoring the performance of the laboratory, the verification of the operation of the technology for performing the specific test-measurement is done. Aptitude testing is a prerequisite for laboratories wishing to be accredited to the quality management standard according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025, which provides the basis for laboratory accreditation.

[i] [i] Z-score – It is a numerical measurement that describes the relationship of a value to the average of a set of values. Z-score is measured by the standard deviation from the mean. If the Z-score is 0, this indicates that the result of the data point is identical to the average score
